About us
Barwon Health is proud to provide aged care facilities to the greater Barwon South West region. We provide extensive services to residents, which begins with high-level care through to specific specialist care.
Our facilities build on the rich history of the McKellar sisters (Ernestine and Catherine) who chose to bring to reality the vision that their mother Grace McKellar had for the 40 acres of land where Wallace and Blakiston Lodge are situated. It was their intent to support the welfare of older and under-privileged people and hence the aged care centres were born.
Fifty years have since passed, but the rich legacy remains at the forefront of all we do, and from this, our model of care captures all and more of what the original vision was.
Our facilities are designed to provide a home away from home for residents where they can be surrounded by the things they love and treasure from home. Residents are supported by the best medical care, provided by qualified nursing staff and a team of committed local GPs who all continually strive for maximum healthcare outcomes. Friendships are formed, cultural needs are integrated into our care plans and our residents feel cared for, supported and enjoy their days either enjoying our lifestyle activities, interacting with other residents or enjoying the beautiful gardens surrounding resident rooms.
In our modern, ever-changing world, we recognise and embrace diversity and inclusion in our residents and also our staff. We constantly strive to continue the history to treat everyone equally and provide culturally appropriate care and services.
We are a fully accredited aged care service. Providing quality care to residents is at the heart of all that we do and stand for.

Accreditation
Barwon Health’s Residential Aged Care facilities are involved in two accreditation programs:
- National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHS).
- The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency (ACSAA). This accreditation program is a Commonwealth Government initiative. All residential and aged care facilities need to be accredited with the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency to continue to receive ongoing government funding.
These two accreditation programs are based upon a commitment from healthcare organisations to continually improve the quality, care and services offered.
