  • Payment of accounts: by paying any accounts and fees for which you are responsible

If you want to know more about your care, you can

  • Ask a member of the clinical team treating you
  • Get a second opinion if you like
  • Choose another person or organisation to speak on your behalf
  • Ask about the qualifications and experience of staff providing your care and treatment
  • Ask to speak with the manager of the area treating you, regarding access to health information about you

Your 10 tips for safer health care

  • Be actively involved in your own health care e.g. take part in decision making
  • Speak up if you have any questions or concerns
  • Learn more about your condition or treatment(s) by asking your health care professional and by using any other reliable sources of information
  • If English is not your first language, you can request an interpreter
  • Keep an up-to-date list of all medicines you are taking
  • Make sure that you understand for what reason you are taking your medications
  • Make sure that you obtain the results of any test or procedure taken
  • Talk to your health care professional about your options if you are admitted to hospital.
  • Make sure you, your doctor and your surgeon understand and agree on the operation or procedure
  • Ask your health care professional to explain to you the treatment plan you will be managing when you return home from hospital.
