Psychiatry Training
About Barwon Health’s Psychiatric Registrar Training Program
Welcome to the Barwon Health Psychiatry Training Program. We hope this website provides potential trainees with a greater understanding to the benefits and opportunities available in undertaking training at Barwon Health, Victoria's largest regional health service, based in Geelong.
Barwon Health offers the highest quality psychiatry training available in Australia and New Zealand. Our trainees are immersed in a positive and engaged culture where they are challenged and supported to become exceptional psychiatrists.
Each year we welcome four new trainees commencing RANZCP training and a limited number of transferring trainees into our program. Our trainees join us from Australia, New Zealand and across the globe, entering a program where they are highly supported in achieving their RANZCP training goals.
Rotations
In addition to the mandatory training rotations, we offer a wide range of specialist training posts in diverse areas including youth psychiatry, indigenous mental health, addiction psychiatry, eating disorders, forensic psychiatry, psychotherapy and private mental health.
Example rotation timetable
* Adult and Youth psychiatry positions comprise of 50% inpatient and 50% community work
** Forensic Psychiatry rotations are conducted as secondments with the Forensicare service
Education Program
In addition to providing protected training time to allow completion of the RANZCP formal education course, our trainees benefit from an in-house education program that covers topics from theory to practice, all organised to help them work and train more effectively.
Exam Preparation
Our dedication to assisting trainees successfully complete their RANZCP exams is demonstrated in our very high pass rates. As an exam host site, we have extensive experience in the conduct of exams and many of our consultant psychiatrists are current RANZCP examiners.
Support
Our trainees receive outstanding supervision from a highly experienced group of RANZCP supervisors. In addition, all trainees participate in monthly peer group supervision, which provides the valuable opportunity to connect with and support their peers both personally and professionally.
Professional Development
We want our trainees to be leaders and provide opportunities to grow such skills. All our trainees are offered formal academic appointments with Deakin University, and play key roles in the supervision and education of students, as well as service development and improvement.
Research
Our trainees receive outstanding opportunities to undertake clinical and academic research. We provide extensive support for trainees conducting their RANZCP scholarly projects and have strong connections with the internationally renowned psychiatric strategic research centre at Deakin University.
