Construction commences McKellar Centre Acute Mental Unit

Friday, 02 July 2021

People in the Barwon South West region will soon have more mental health support closer to home, with construction underway on the new McKellar Centre Acute Mental Health Unit.

The Geelong facility will provide 16 acute mental health beds and community-based care from a contemporary, safe and high-quality hospital setting.

The McKellar Centre site provides a new opportunity for adults who need complementary access to rehabilitation and other healthcare services to support their care.

As construction progresses for this project, some trees will be removed from the site to create the required space for the build.

Barwon Health is conscious of its ecological footprint and continuously working to further our sustainability efforts. There will be several internal courtyards, as well as enclosed garden areas, which will provide a secure area for patients and staff to enjoy greenery and fresh air.

The 57 trees being removed have been assessed by an arborist for overall site safety and will be replaced with a targeted replanting program, as we recognise a surrounding natural landscape plays an important role in wellbeing for our residents.

This project is scheduled for completion currently in late 2022 and is part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to deliver four new acute mental health facilities in Melbourne and Geelong.
