Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research - Professor Alison Hutchinson

Background

I am a registered nurse and hold the Chair in Nursing at Barwon Health. I am also an Alfred Deakin Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin University, and I am the Co-Director of the Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research in the Institute for Health Transformation at Deakin University. As Director of the Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research, I provide strategic direction for the Centre, comprising more than 40 researchers undertaking research in the areas of patient safety, patient experience and workforce development.

I have the distinction of being one of only a few Australian nurses to have successfully completed a formal postdoctoral fellowship program overseas, having trained as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Alberta, Canada. I received a national fellowship in knowledge translation award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and a provincial fellowship award from Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (now Alberta Innovates). I am internationally recognised for my implementation science/knowledge translation research and am an Associate Editor for the journals, ‘Implementation Science’ and ‘Implementation Science Communications’. I have attracted competitive research funding from a range of funding bodies.

With more than 200 publications, I have co-authored several book chapters and have published widely in international peer-reviewed journals. I have supervised to completion more than 10 doctoral students and numerous honours and master’s students. I have also provided mentorship for several postdoctoral fellows.
