​Concerns about personal safety can have a significant impact on staff, and we are continuing to take proactive steps to enhance safety across our sites.

Last month, we commenced a four-week trial providing 200 dedicated parking spaces for PM shift staff across the Bellarine Street multi-storey car park, Argyle Street undercroft and Youang Surgery Centre car park.

Following review of the initial data and staff feedback, the trial has been extended to 27 September 2026.

Barwon Health remains focused on providing a safe and secure environment for our staff, patients and visitors. Over recent months, we have:

Increased security patrols and staff escort services
Security resources have been increased to provide greater support during shift change periods, particularly in the afternoon, evening and overnight. Security escorts are available on request to the Bellerine Street multi-storey and HERB car parks, and security operations continue to be refined to ensure they align with staff safety, emergency preparedness and incident response priorities.

Emergency contact details and intercoms
We have installed additional signage with emergency contact details in all car parks. In addition, we have commenced the rollout of emergency intercoms, with the first intercom becoming operational this week at the Bellerine Street multi-storey car park.

Improved lighting across the University Hospital Geelong (UHG) precinct
Following a comprehensive lighting assessment of the UHG precinct, 21 additional lights have been installed in key pedestrian pathways and parking areas to improve visibility and staff safety. In addition, permanent lighting has now been installed at the new Myers Street car park.

Enhanced CCTV monitoring
Security surveillance has been strengthened through funding for four new Victoria Police-monitored CCTV cameras around the UHG precinct, with procurement and installation underway. Barwon Health has also enhanced its existing CCTV network, providing 24/7 monitoring across staff car parks, with further upgrades planned to improve coverage and monitoring capability. We continue to work with Victoria Police and City of Greater Geelong on these matters.

A trial of additional dedicated PM-shift parking
A review of staff parking arrangements is underway, with a focus on improving access to parking closer to the hospital for afternoon and PM-shift workers. As part of this work, additional dedicated PM-shift parking is being trialled in the Bellerine Street multi-storey car park and near the Youang Surgery Centre. New leadership roles focused on staff safety and engagement
To further strengthen staff safety, Barwon Health has established new leadership roles to lead ongoing safety improvements and help ensure staff safety remains a key organisational priority.
