Endocrinology across Barwon Health consists of teams of health clinicians at University Hospital Geelong, McKellar Centre and the Endocrinology Clinic. The clinicians have specific skills in management of endocrine conditions such as adrenal, pituitary or thyroid conditions, metabolic bone disease, and syndromes of hormone deficiency or excess.


Conditions seen

Barwon Health offers an Endocrinology service for the following conditions:

  • Adrenal conditions including insufficiency, incidentaloma, hormonal excess
  • Pituitary conditions including pituitary hormone excess or deficiency
  • Bone and mineral metabolism including hypercalcaemia, hypocalcaemia, metabolic bone disease and Paget’s disease
  • Thyroid conditions including hyperthyroidism, severe hypothyroidism and some thyroid masses
  • Syndromes of hypogonadism
  • Tumours of endocrine glands causing hormonal excess or deficiency

Conditions not seen

Barwon Health Endocrinology does not accept referrals for the following conditions:

  • Obesity management
  • Lipid management
  • Hirsuitism in women without androgen excess
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Menopause management (refer to the Women’s Health clinic)
  • Uncomplicated osteoporosis
  • Primary hypothyroidism that has not been treated with thyroxine replacement
  • Undifferentiated fatigue without hormone insufficiency or excess
  • Undifferentiated menstrual disturbances
  • Thyroid mass which is suitable for surgical referral (see Ear, Nose and Throat)
  • Hypoglycaemia symptoms without confirmatory glucose levels
  • Patients who are being treated for the same condition at another Victorian public hospital
  • Children under 18 years of age

How do I access this service?

To be seen in the Endocrinology specialist clinic you need to be referred by your GP, another specialist doctor or your Barwon Health doctor.

We are unable to see you in our clinics without a referral.


Appointment timeframe

All requests for specialist clinic appointments are scheduled according to the patient’s clinical need. Clinicians assess whether an appointment is urgent or routine, based on information provided in the referral.

Barwon Health aims to offer a first appointment within 30 days to all patients with urgent problems. Patients with routine (non-urgent) problems are offered appointments as they become available.

If you do not use the above clinical software, please complete a referral letter on your practice/health service letterhead, ensuring all required referral information is included.

For patients who require reassessment, a new referral should be sent through. To facilitate earlier access, the new referral must contain the following information:

  • State the referral is an update for a current patient
  • Date of original referral
  • Reason for requesting a review of referral (e.g. deterioration in clinical condition, pathology)

The referrer will be notified of the outcome of the re-triage process.
