Audiology Services

The Barwon Health Audiology department offers a broad range of specialist outpatient and inpatient services to both the paediatric and adult population.  Our services include the diagnostic assessment of auditory disorders and management of patients with hearing loss and communication difficulties, and also the diagnostic assessment of vestibular (balance) function.

The Barwon Health Audiology department aims for early and accurate diagnosis of hearing loss and balance disorders in order to prevent adverse outcomes and ensure patient management is appropriate and optimal.

Services
Services are provided to all age groups, from newborns to the very aged and can be modified to suit patients with special needs.

Standard Audiology Consultations:

Behavioural hearing testing

  • Behavioural Observation Audiometry for infants (approximately 6-10 months of age)
  • Visual Reinforcement Audiometry for infants/toddlers (approximately 10 months – 2 ½ years of age)
  • Play Audiometry for children (approximately 2 ½ to 5 years)
  • Pure Tone Audiometry (5 years to the adult and elderly population)

Speech audiometry (where appropriate)

Middle ear function analysis.

Specialist Audiology Consultations:

Newborns / infants hearing testing (from around 2 weeks corrected age)

Objective electrophysiological testing performed during infants natural sleep, includes Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing, Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) testing and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE). Older children may be assessed under mild sedation or general anaesthesia.

Audio-Vestibular Assessment (AVA)

The AVA service is unique to the Barwon South West region of Victoria and aims to support patients with balance and dizzy problems by assisting with differential diagnoses of these conditions using the latest technology.

The AVA battery includes: standard audiological consultation, ABR, Cervical Evoked Myogenic Potentials (cVEMP), Calorics, video nystagromaphy (VNG) and video head impulse testing (vHIT)

Inpatient Service

The largely unique inpatient service aims to reduce the impact hearing loss has on effective communication during a patients hospital stay.

Services include ward based audiological consultations and hearing loss management (eg. loan assistive listening devices and other communication aids, emergency hearing aid troubleshooting, wax removal and nursing/medical staff liaison).

Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD) Assessment

The CAPD battery includes; standard audiological consultation, ABR, OAE, Listening in Spatialized Noise – Sentence Test(LISN-S); Multiple Auditory Processing Assessment (MAPA) and Test of Auditory Perceptual Skills Revised (TAPS-R)

Complex Visual Reinforcement Audiometry Clinics

These clinics are arranged at the discretion of the department for patients with complex needs (eg. behavioural difficulties, developmental delays, second opinion). Clinics can include any of the aforementioned assessments with the availability two fully qualified audiologists.

Adults (site of lesion) testing

Includes: standard audiological consultation and ABR

External referrals

Written referral is essential for audio-vestibular assessment service access.  We are currently only accepting referrals from neurologists, ear, nose, throat specialists and the Barwon Health Falls and Balance Clinic.

For all other services a written referral is appreciated but not essential. We accept referrals from a variety of sources including: general practitioners, medical specialists (paediatricians; ear, nose, throat specialists; neurologists), maternal and child health nurses, speech pathologists, our hearing services, schools, parents/self.

All services a free for those registered under Medicare.
