Motor Neurone Disease Clinic

The Motor Neurone Disease Clinic is for people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) who need assessment and input by a team of health professionals. The clinic helps people with MND to achieve the best life possible under the circumstances.

Who is eligible for the clinic?

The service is for everyone with Motor Neurone Disease.

Who might you see at the clinic?

The clinic team consists of:

  • Dietitian
  • Neurologist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physiotherapist
  • Rehabilitation Specialist
  • Respiratory Services
  • Social Worker
  • Specialist Care Coordinator
  • Speech Pathologist

The team can refer you to other services or professionals as required. All appointments at the Motor Neurone Disease Clinic are Bulk Billed.

How can I be referred to the clinic?

Clients need a diagnosis of motor neurone disease. Referrals must be completed by a medical practitioner with a provider number.

What can I expect from the clinic?

When your referral is received, the Specialist Care Coordinator will call you to conduct a phone questionnaire, and to answer any questions you might have. The Specialist Care Coordinator will book an appointment for you to attend the clinic. 

You will be actively involved with your healthcare team in developing your individualised care plan.

The assessment process will address a range of aspects of care including medical status, mobility, home set-up (e.g. rails, steps and bathroom set-up), occupational performance, thinking skills, communication, swallowing, respiration, nutrition, continence, social situation and emotional health. You can expect that your initial visit will take approximately 3 hours.

What should I bring when I attend the Clinic?

Please bring a list of your current medications and any other information you would like to share with the health care professionals. If you wear glasses or hearing aids or use a mobility aid or any specialised communication aides, please bring these with you.  If possible, you are encouraged to have a family member, friend or other support person accompany you to your appointments.

How can I contact the Clinic?

The clinic is based at the McKellar Centre Community Rehabilitation Centre, part of Barwon Health, located at 45-95 Ballarat Road, North Geelong.

Clinic hours are Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9am until 1pm. Allied Health appointments are also available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
