Aquatic Physiotherapy Service

Aquatic physiotherapy is a form of physiotherapy treatment or exercise conducted in a heated pool. 

Aquatic physiotherapy helps to improve or maintain physical well-being for many people.

The buoyancy, turbulence and resistance of water create a special therapeutic environment not possible on land. 

Who benefits from aquatic physiotherapy?

Aquatic physiotherapy assists people rehabilitate from or more effectively self-manage many conditions including:

  • Arthritis
  • Trauma
  • Back and neck pain, and other chronic pain presentations
  • Improving fitness for surgery
  • Recovery from surgery
  • Neurological rehabilitation, including brain injury, stroke and Parkinson’s Disease

Note: You do not need to be able to swim to participate in aquatic physiotherpy.

Information for referrers

Acquatic physiotherapy no longer operates as a standalone service or accepts direct referrals. There will be no ‘direct to the public’ aquatic physiotherapy or ongoing independent exercise groups

Patients will continue to be offered hydrotherapy as an integrated part of their treatment program through the pain clinic, community rehabilitation or community health programs. 

Aquatic physiotherapy will be a tailored, time limited, goal orientated service offered as an adjunct to traditional physiotherapy. 

Please continue to refer to our many alternative Barwon Health programs for rehabilitation or management of chronic health conditions.
