Orthopaedics: B-CORE - Dr Stephen Gill

Background

I am a Clinician Researcher. I work as Senior Research Fellow with the Barwon Centre for Orthopaedic Research and Education (B-CORE) in the School of Medicine at Deakin University, and am a Senior Clinician Physiotherapist with Barwon Health, Geelong. Subsequent to my physiotherapy training, I completed my PhD investigating exercise-based programs for people awaiting hip or knee replacement surgery. Most of my research has since been a combination of clinical and health services research.

Research Focus

My current research work focuses on musculoskeletal health conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, and injuries. Our research team has a particular interest in shoulder conditions such rotator cuff disease, osteoarthritis, adhesive capsulitis and shoulder instability. We are conducting a range of studies investigating shoulder structure and function, biomechanics, biomarkers and gene expression in surgical and control cohorts.

I am also investigating Australian Football injuries, particularly gender differences. Another program of research is investigating whether a new technique called ‘microembolisation’ effectively treats musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis and fasciopathy.
