Surgery - Anne Vandewater

I became a Certified Practice Manager through the Australian Association of Practice Management and worked in this role for over 20 years. During this time I completed an Advanced Diploma in Management and Diploma in Business. I coordinate and compile the Department of Surgery’s annual report, research reports and related publications providing relevant research information and reports to other departments of Deakin University and Barwon Health. I provide high quality confidential and general administrative support to:

  • The Chair of Surgery, Associate Professor in Surgery and the Senior Lecturer in Surgery.
  • Non-academic staff of the Department of Surgery - procedural advice.
  • Responsibilities in the provision of clinical services, liaising with theatre staff, outpatients, anaesthetics and Private Hospitals for both private and public patients.
  • Coordinate patient appointments and billing thereof.
  • General Surgical Fellows and Registrars sited within the department.
  • Preparing rosters for academic meetings and on call.
  • Organising and coordinating the teaching program for 3rd year Surgery students and 4th year elective students.

An important role involves liaising with the Deakin Clinical School in regard to research and clinical training responsibilities of the Department of Surgery Academics, OSCE exams, surgical research for Deakin students and Surgical Registrars. The Department of Surgery is strongly integrated with University Hospital Geelong, therefore although I am primarily responsible to Deakin University, many of the roles are related to Barwon Health and other agencies.

Research Focus

I have been a member of the Department of Surgery since 2015. During my time I have been actively involved in showcasing the Department of Surgery research. I have enjoyed actively contributing to the management and coordination of research activities and have provided research support and facilitated various research activities and workshops over the years. The introduction of our Department Publication Database to store PDF files of Published papers has been a welcome resource and now holds access to over 500 papers. My role is very versatile and integrated which gives me the opportunity to provide researchers with various resources to help them with their careers. My interests include providing Executive/Business Administration, Research Support and Roster Management. I am inspired by the high calibre surgical research output of the department and strive to provide research administration support that is of the highest quality.
