IMPACT - Eslam Ahmed
Background
I graduated with a Bachelor of Biological Sciences in 2008 with an excellent degree of honour (top 5%) from the Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. I got a university position and worked as a research and teaching assistant for 9 years. In 2016, I was awarded a MSc. of Cell Biology and Histology from the same institute. From 2017 to 2019, I was awarded the Japanese government scholarship (MEXT) to be a research student at Hiroshima University, Japan. I had the chance to acquire extensive experience in multiple research techniques related to cell biology and neuroscience. As a milestone on the path of achieving my goal, in 2020, I was granted the Deakin University postgraduate scholarship to obtain my PhD in the same field.
Research Focus
Patients experiencing lung inflammation, like allergic asthma and COPD, have a high risk of developing depression and anxiety as a downstream symptom. Likewise, patients under significant stress and social anxiety are at risk of having more severe lung inflammation, and depression. However, the observed links between lung inflammation, social stress, and mental health, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these connections remain poorly studied which is the gap in knowledge that I am currently focusing on. To further investigate, we are using a variety of techniques including behavioural mice cohorts, biochemical and histological experiments, along with statistical analysis of human clinical data sets.
