Emergency - Dr Julian Stella

Background

I graduated with honours from Melbourne University School of Medicine in 1993. Having spent a number of undergraduate years at the then Geelong Clinical school and with an interest in Emergency Medicine I elected to go to The (then) Geelong Hospital (now University Hospital Geelong) and joined the Emergency Medicine training program as a 1st year Registrar in 1996. In 1997 I transferred over to Perth and began work at Fremantle Hospital. I undertook a 1 year Fellowship in Trauma research during my time there and completed my training in Emergency Medicine in 2000 (recognised by ACEM, the college of Emergency Medicine in March 2001) and then returned to Victoria.

In January 2001 I commenced work again at Geelong Hospital this time as a staff specialist in the Emergency Department. I have pursued interests in Research, point of care ultrasound, toxicology/toxinology and medical education (Director of Emergency Training and co-convenor of medical students with Deakin University).

Research Focus

My research interests reflect the broad range of clinical and systems issues that are encountered in Emergency Medicine including public health and education/training. The current major focus is on COVID related research such as: looking at ED data for changes in patterns of presentation since the pandemic; projects looking at the behavioural drivers behind changing patterns of ED presentations over this time; involvement in the COVID SHEILD and Barwon Health COIVD 19 research
