Announcing the Finalists for the 2021 BH DU Research Prizes

Barwon Health Senior Medical Staff Group HMO/Registrar Research Prize

The finalists selected for the Barwon Health Senior Medical Staff Group HMO/Registrar Research Prize will present their research at the Research & Grand Round Webinar on Tuesday 16 November. We wish these future leaders every success with their presentations:

  • Dr Julia Lim: Long-term Renal Outcome Post Multimodal Computed Tomography in Stroke Evaluation
  • Dr Kirk Underwood: Can the Alcohol Withdrawal Scale be Applied to Post- operative Patients? Determining the False Positive Rate of the CIWA-Ar After Major Abdominal Surgery
  • Dr Alex Rowe: A Road Less Travelled - Hospital At Home In Mental Health
  • Dr Yuanzhang Jiao: Improving decision making in the diagnosis of anastomotic leaks in elective colorectal cancer surgery

Barwon Health & Deakin University Best Paper of the Year Awards

Congratulations to the four finalists selected for the Barwon Health Deakin University Best Paper of the Year (scientists), who will present their papers at the Research & Grand Round Webinar on Tuesday 23 November:

  • Mr Tarka Raj Bhatta: SARS-CoV-2 genomic and subgenomic RNAs in diagnostic samples are not an indicator of active replication
  • Mr Nathan Nuzum: Gut microbiota differences between healthy older adults and individuals with Parkinson's disease: A systematic review
  • Ms Kara Anderson: Normative data for peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) bone parameters in Australian men
  • Dr Lena Stephens: An evaluation of SecondBite®'s FoodMate®, a nutrition education and skill-building program aimed at reducing food insecurity.

Congratulations to the four finalists selected for the Barwon Health Deakin University Best Paper of the Year (clinician researchers), who will present their papers at the Research & Grand Round Webinar on Tuesday 30 November:

  • Mr Steve Lau: Transanal Mesorectal Excision: Early Outcomes in Australia and New Zealand
  • Dr Matthew Maiden: Long-Term Outcomes Following Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in Older Adults: A Registry-Based Cohort Study.
  • Mr Matthew Thackeray: Lean mass as a risk factor for Intensive Care Unit admission: an observational study
  • Ms Sharyn Milnes: Values, preferences, and goals identified during shared decision-making between critically ill patients and their doctors.
