Monday, 11 October 2021

Barwon Health has added a new vaccination option for the community.

Moderna vaccinations will be available at Ford from Tuesday Oct 12.

Moderna will be offered to people aged 12 and over and will be offered as a walk-in option.

“As cases rise in our region it is even more important that people get vaccinated as soon as possible,” Prof. Athan said.

“The Moderna vaccine is a highly effective vaccine that protects, you, your loved ones and the community.

“Moderna is a similar vaccine to Pfizer and only has a four week interval between doses meaning people can be fully vaccinated fairly quickly.”

Walk-ins and bookings are currently available for AstraZeneca and Moderna at the Ford Community Vaccination Hub in Norlane.

To make a booking call 1800 675 398 or book online https://portal.cvms.vic.gov.au/.

MODERNA FACTS:
• Spikevax (Moderna) is approved for use in people aged 12 years and over.

• You need 2 doses of the Moderna vaccine, given at least 4 weeks apart.

• Like Pfizer, the Moderna vaccine is a messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine. This type of vaccine uses a genetic code called RNA to make your body's cells produce the coronavirus’ specific spike protein. Your immune system cells then recognise the spike protein as a threat and begin building an immune response against it. The RNA from the vaccine does not change your DNA in any way, and your body quickly breaks it down.

• The Moderna vaccine does not contain any live virus, and it cannot give you COVID-19.

• Common side effects after the Moderna vaccine include:pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, muscle pain, fever and chills, joint pain. Most side effects are mild and go away within 2 or 3 days.

• The World Health Organization says studies have shown Moderna's vaccine is 94.1 per cent effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19.

• Moderna is a US company and its vaccine is manufactured in the United States before being shipped around the world. Lonza, a Swiss manufacturer, also produces the Moderna vaccine for European markets.
