Currently, Barwon Health employs approximately 65 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff across the areas of Medicine, Mental Health, Community Health, Surgical and Critical Care and Corporate Services and across six different sites.

There is a dedicated Aboriginal Health Unit based at University Hospital Geelong. The staff within the Unit provide cultural support and advocate for Aboriginal health in all its forms.

Barwon Health works very closely with two local tertiary education providers – NIKERI Institute at Deakin University and The Gordon TAFE.
Courses that could lead you to Barwon Health via NIKERI:

Please note that admission to NIKERI is based on alternative entry – an ATAR or high school graduation certificate is not a requirement.

Future growth
In 2024, Barwon Health will be opening the Geelong Early Parenting Centre. Designed to help families with children 0-4 years, the new centre will feature residential family units and day-stay places, providing both short-term and longer residential stay programs to improve the health, wellbeing and developmental outcomes of children.
We are also looking to plan our workforce for the new Barwon Women’s and Children’s facilities. The new Barwon Women’s and Children’s will provide world-class women’s health (including maternity) and paediatric facilities and deliver additional capacity to ensure families in Geelong and surrounding communities can continue to access the very best care, close to home.
There are many exciting developments that will lead to an increased need for a wide variety of patient-facing staff.
