Testimonials

Geraldine - Audiologist

Role: Grade 2 Audiologist

I was initially attracted to working at Barwon Health due to the positive and nurturing experience I had during my university placement, where I developed a passion for paediatric audiology and a soft spot for the healthcare service. As a university student, I worked closely with ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists in regional New South Wales, and transitioning to a hospital setting was the next natural progression. Since then, my career journey at Barwon Health has been an exciting one. I started by primarily assessing the hearing of children and adults, and I have now expanded my expertise to include infant diagnosis and adult vestibular (balance) assessment. Our workload in the audiology clinics is very varied, and every patient has a different story, making every day unique. Barwon Health has supported my career development by providing me with opportunities to refine my skill set and expand my clinical knowledge through professional development, and access to a wide range of testing facilities and equipment. What I enjoy most about my role is the exposure it gives me to a wide variety of patients, from newborns to the elderly, presenting with a multitude of ear-related conditions. I am able to empower patients with knowledge about their hearing, counselling them throughout and creating pathways to other specialist areas to address their individual needs. What sets working at Barwon Health apart from other healthcare services is the plentiful support and guidance from my manager and senior colleagues, as well as access to new and innovative technological equipment, which allows us to be pioneers in the infant paediatric diagnostic space.

Role: Audiologist

I was attracted to work at Barwon Health because of the broad range of services they provide to patients of all ages and backgrounds. Working in a multidisciplinary team where everyone helps one another in providing a holistic and individualised approach to each patient was also appealing. Although I recently joined the Audiology team, I have felt welcomed and supported by everyone around me. I have been able to see a diverse range of complex cases and educate patients and their families on hearing and its importance in our lives. Barwon Health has supported my career development through the Allied Health Early Career Program and completing online modules that assisted me in knowing the system at the hospital. I enjoy the variety in my role, as every day feels different, and spending time in the paediatric room testing infants and young children never fails to put a smile on my face. Compared to other health services, Barwon Health provides an immense amount of education and training opportunities to ensure all staff members are supported and cared for. They also provide great support to the community through various services, making this place unique and special.
