Who are we?

We are a committed group of endocrinologists and physicians providing a high level of expertise for patients in Geelong and the surrounding Barwon South West region, extending down to south-west Victoria.

We offer general endocrinology with particular sub-speciality (and research) interests in bone, thyroid and diabetes.

We strive for clinical excellence and stay abreast of all new developments. We believe in strong partnerships with referring LMOs and being a part of a multidisciplinary team.

We currently have a credentialed diabetes educator as part of the team. Bone density services are also available on-site at University Hospital Geelong.

Where do we practice?

Douglas Hocking Research Institute private consulting suites are located at University Hospital Geelong on Bellerine Street (entrance 3). 

Ward referrals are provided at St John of God Geelong Hospital and Epworth Hospital upon request.

Cost

We are a private practice and charge privately on the day of consultation. A valid referral is required for each appointment.

Meet our Endocrinologists

Professor Mark Kotowicz

Assoc Prof Kotowicz is Director of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes and an experienced physician and clinical investigator whose research activities have focused on the pathophysiology, epidemiology and treatment of osteoporosis. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1976 and trained at Sydney Hospital, the Repatriation General Hospital (Concord) and the Prince Henry/Prince of Wales Hospital Group. After completing his FRACP, he was appointed to Mayo Clinic and Foundation as a Senior Research Fellow in the Osteoporosis Research Unit under the direction of Prof Larry Riggs and LJ Melton III between 1987-9. He was one of two full-time clinical academics appointed to the University of Melbourne’s Department of Medicine at Geelong and St Vincent’s hospitals in 1991. This was the first regional academic department established in Victoria and became an independent department in 2001, the Department of Clinical & Biomedical Sciences: Barwon Health, supporting epidemiological, clinical research trials and basic laboratory research. In 2010 he joined the Deakin University School of Medicine.

He designed and secured initial funding for the Geelong Osteoporosis Study and has been a principal investigator on the project since 1993. He has presented data regularly at national and international scientific meetings with over 150 publications in the peer reviewed literature (H-index 42, citation 6452). He has served on the NHMRC review panel since 1994 and on the Musculoskeletal Grant Review Panel in 2007. He was a member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Specialist Advisory Committee in Endocrinology from 2003-14 and chaired this committee and the Joint Endocrinology and Chemical Pathology Training Committee 2012-14. He is an active member of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS), a member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), the International Bone and Mineral society, International Osteoporosis Foundation, European Calcified Tissue Society, the Endocrine Society, the Australian Diabetes Society and the Endocrine Society of Australia. He is currently Chair of the Therapeutics Committee of ANZBMS.

Dr. Samantha Worboys MBBS (Hons); FRACP

Samantha obtained her medical degree with honours from Monash University in 1992. Her medical training continued at Monash medical centre (MMC) and its affiliated hospitals in Melbourne and regional Victoria. She became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2000 after completing her Endocrine and Diabetes training at MMC (including Research Fellow at Jean Hailes Women's Health Centre), The Alfred Hospital and St.Vincent's. Samantha commenced her role as a Consultant Endocrinologist in 2001 at University Hospital Geelong, Barwon Health. She consults in the Diabetes Referral Centre (attending additional outreach clinics at Newcomb and Wathaurong) and privately with Endocrinology at Barwon Health.  She is a Senior Clinical Lecturer with Deakin University teaching medical students. She has been a FRACP Examiner since 2003 with a current active role in preparing doctors for their specialist exams.

Dr Myra Yeo MBBS, FRACP

Dr Myra Yeo graduated from University of Melbourne in 1995. She had her basic and advanced medical training at The Canberra Hospital, University Hospital Geelong and St Vincent's Hospital. She became a member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2004 after completing her Endocrinology and Diabetes training at St Vincent's Hospital and University Hospital Geelong after which she started working at University Hospital Geelong in 2004 as an Endocrinologist and General Physician.

Myra currently runs inpatient and outpatient clinics in both the public and private hospitals. She is responsible for the diabetes and pregnancy service at University Hospital Geelong, where they provide pre-conception counselling and education, as well as ongoing care for pregnant women with diabetes (type 1 DM, type 2 DM, gestational diabetes), in collaboration with the obstetric team.

Myra attends annual international and national meetings in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obstetric Medicine as part of her professional development.

She is a supervisor for the Endocrinology registrars, and is involved with education for the registrars, residents, medical students and diabetes educators.

Dr Jaideep Kulkarni MBBS, FRACP

Jaideep completed his basic physician training at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He became a specialist physician in Endocrinology in 2013 after completing specialist training at the University Hospital Geelong. Jaideep joined the consulting suites of Endocrinology at University Hospital Geelong in the same year and continues to work as a consultant in General Medicine and Endocrinology at the public hospital. He has an interest in all aspects of General Endocrinology and he is also involved with the Clinical Trials Unit at the hospital.

Dr Balvinder Kalra MBBS, FRACP

Balvinder completed his Basic Physician training at Box Hill Hospital, Melbourne in 2012 and he then became a specialist physician in Endocrinology in 2016. He completed the first two years of specialist physician training at Box Hill Hospital, Melbourne and the final year at the University Hospital Geelong, Barwon Health. Balvinder joined the consulting suites of Endocrinology at University Hospital Geelong in 2016. He has an interest in all aspects of General Endocrinology and managing diabetes in pregnancy.

Dr Richard Arnott

Richard has wide experience in clinical medicine and endocrinology. After completing a Medical Degree at the University of Melbourne he did Specialist training in several Melbourne hospitals and in Canberra. He has been involved with clinical research and completed a PhD at the University of Sydney in 1985. He has held appointments at several Melbourne hospitals and is currently Endocrinologist at The Alfred Hospital. He has a particular interest in Diabetes, Thyroid disorders and pituitary disorders.

Meet our Diabetes Nurse Practitioner

Leanne Hume

Leanne has over 20 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse working primarily within diabetes for over 14 years and most recently completing a Masters of Nursing Practice at Deakin University.

Leanne holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and a Bachelor of Nursing from Deakin University.  She went onto further study and training to become a qualified Nurse Practitioner which allows her to provide a more holistic and extensive nursing service including prescribing medications, diabetes education and support, ordering pathology and organising referrals as needed.  Her service attracts a Medicare rebate without the need for a Team Care Arrangement.

Leanne has extensive experience working and supporting people who have type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes, with expertise in Insulin Pump Therapy, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and diabetes technology.
