Service Description:What service is provided?

Community Health and Rehabilitation Services (CH&RS) speech pathologists are trained allied health professionals who assess and treat communication disorders in children:
• Aged up to six years, prior to school entry
• With a speech delay and difficult to understand
• With a language delay (not children with a cognitive or developmental delay)
• With a stutter
• With voice difficulties

Children who have a diagnosed disability or suspected developmental delay are ineligible for Barwon Health’s community health speech pathology services. There are specialised programs available for children with disabilities or developments delays and these cases should be referred to Early Childhood Intervention Services (ECIS).

On acceptance of referral, the child and their family will be offered an appointment at a screening clinic at the nearest Barwon Community Health Centre listed above. The purpose of this clinic is to determine eligibility, gather further information from the family and assess the child’s communication skills.

Once eligible, the speech pathologist and family will discuss goals and options for follow-up services that may include:
• Further assessment
• Group or individual therapy
• Parent training/workshops
• Liaison with other health professionals
• Support with transition to school

To summarise the process for CH&RS speech pathology services:
Referral to Information & Access -> Screening Clinic at Community Health Centre -> Child & family receives speech pathology services
