Cardiothoracic Unit

The Cardiothoracic Unit is the sole provider of surgery for adult heart and lung diseases in Geelong and South West Region. The scope of work covers wide range of operations on heart and lungs with the exception of heart and lung transplants. The unit performs over 400 heart and 140 thoracic operations per year.

The Cardiothoracic Unit was established at University Hospital Geelong in 1997 and is the only regional unit of its kind in Victoria. A wide range of adult cardiothoracic surgery services and consultative service to the the two private hospitals in Geelong is provided. Cardiac surgery back up is also provided for coronary angioplasty programs in St John of God hospitals in Geelong and Ballarat and the Geelong Private Hospital.

The unit is one of the six Victoria public units, participating in the Australasian Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons (ASCTS) cardiac surgery database project, which is funded by the Victorian Government. The annual reports of this database over the last six years show that the unit has been one of the most successful units in Victoria, with persistently very good outcomes for the patients. ASCTS cardiac surgery database annual reports can be accessed through ASCTS website under "Outcomes".
