Committees
It is a requirement of the National Health Medical Research Council (NHMRC) that all medical or scientific research undertaken with humans must be approved by an ethics committee consituted in keeping with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. Further to the HREC, Barwon Health has established the RRC, which is empowered to approve low or negligible risk projects.
Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)
The Barwon Health Human Research Ethics Committee reviews the ethical and scientific aspects of research and medical activities involving humans undertaken at Barwon Health and also to consider such projects on behalf of other institutions as required.

Research Review Committee (RRC)
All research applications are sent electronically to the RRC before the ethics review. The RRC is empowered to review projects from a technical, scientific and governance perspective and make recommendations to the Ethics Committee. The RRC may approve low or negligible risk projects. Applications are sent electronically to hrec@barwonhealth.org.au before 5 pm the RRC agenda date.

Community Mental Health Research Governance Committee
The Community & Mental Health Research and Quality Assurance Governance Committee has been established (to monitor research, quality assurance and audit projects proposed and conducted within Community & Mental Health) as a sub-committee of the Community & Mental Health Quality and Risk Management (Q&RM) Committee. Research and quality assurance governance can be defined as the process of ensuring that the ethical, clinical and legal responsibilities of the organisation are attended to.
