The inaugural Barwon Health Ageing Well Expo was held on Tuesday 14 October at the McKellar Centre, with the aim of promoting to people the long-term benefits of living a healthy lifestyle across all aspects of life including emotional, vocational, physical, intellectual and social to the local community.
The Expo was a great success with over 300 members of the public attending over the day. The expo will be the first of many annual celebrations to be held at the McKellar Centre to promote a positive outlook on ageing for older adults within the Geelong region.
The Ageing Well Expo demonstrated the benefits of a healthy lifestyle by giving as many older adults as possible the means to experience activities and exercise in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere. Over 30 exhibitors were in attendance to promote living life through wellness in all aspects be that emotional, vocational, physical, intellectual, and social. Activity is an important wellness dimension that positively influences all of life’s areas by improving physical function and mental skills, improving outlook and offering social contact.
A number of workshops and health checks were available on the day and special guest, Peter Hitchener (Channel 9 Newsreader and Barwon Health Foundation Patron) officially opened the event.
The expo introduced older adults to:
· Healthy lifestyles
· How they can access activities
· How they can access services
· How they can keep safe and well in the community
· Free health checks
· Give information on how to keep well
· Interactive workshops e.g. laughter therapy, Tai-chi
