Low risk applications

Low risk research

Low risk research is where the only foreseeable risk is one of discomfort. Where the risk, even if unlikely, is more serious than discomfort, the research is not low risk.

If the proposed research does not meet the requirement for 'exempt from committee review', and is negligible or low risk, your project will be reviewed by the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC).

Please see the Committees, meetings & dates webpage for the HREC's meeting and submission close dates.

How to prepare a low risk research application

If you think your research fits into the low risk category, please view the low risk application guide, found at the top of this page, and follow the steps on how to apply.

Please note: All researchers are expected to have read the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, and to conduct research according to these guidelines.

Do I need to complete an LNR SSA form?

Researchers must complete and submit an LNR SSA as part of their application if:

  • The researcher is external to Barwon Health; or
  • The research is being conducted at multiple sites; or
  • The research is being submitted through the Single Ethical Review Process (SERP)

Please see the Multi-site applications webpage for further information on the SERP application process.

An LNR SSA is not required for Barwon Health single-site research.

Please note that when an LNR SSA is not required, a Low Risk Single-Site Application Guide must be submitted with your application.
