The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University Hospital Geelong is a 24 bed level III adult, mixed medical, surgical, cardiothoracic and level II paediatric ICU. It forms part of a 406-bed teaching hospital servicing a catchment area of roughly 500,000 within the Barwon South West region. The ICU has continued to commit to the values and goals of Barwon Health, and to provide world-class care to critically ill patients and their families.
The ICU has experienced rapid growth in activity and service delivery. In 2015 the ICU cared for more patients than ever before. This included ventilating over 900 patients for the first time, and close to 450 cardiac surgical patients, 200 critically ill children, and 150 patients that needed transfer in from the region.
